Description

The essential needs of childbearing women in all countries, and of their babies and families, are the focus of a thought-provoking series of international studies on midwifery being published in The Lancet. Many of those needs are still not being met, decades after they have been recognized. New solutions are required.

The findings of this series support a shift from fragmented maternal and newborn care provision that is focussed on identification and treatment of pathology to a whole-system approach that provides skilled care for all. The evidence discussed across the series indicates that wherever women and babies are, whatever their circumstances or the health system in their country, midwifery is pivotal to their survival, health and wellbeing.

This session will launch the series in front of a national and international audience and to the world beyond. Authors of the series will present the papers, supported by the voices of women and the global maternal and newborn health community.
